What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)?
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) — also called directional boring or trenchless drilling — is a steerable, trenchless construction method used to install underground utilities without excavating open trenches. Instead of digging up the ground surface, an HDD rig launches a steerable drill head into the earth at a shallow angle, bores along a precisely planned underground path, and then pulls the utility pipe or conduit back through the completed bore hole.
The result is a clean, accurate underground installation with minimal disruption to the surface — no torn-up lawns, no destroyed driveways, no road closures. HDD is the modern standard for installing gas lines, water mains, fiber optic networks, electrical conduit, sewer lines, and virtually any underground utility in developed areas.
WyoTex Directional LLC is a professional HDD contractor headquartered in New Braunfels, Texas, serving the Austin–San Antonio corridor and projects statewide. What sets us apart from other HDD contractors is our specific licensing and certification for gas line installation — a credential most directional drilling companies don't carry.
How Horizontal Directional Drilling Works
The HDD process involves three primary phases, each requiring precision equipment and experienced operators to ensure a successful, damage-free installation:
Phase 1: Pilot Bore
The HDD rig launches a small-diameter drill head into the ground at the planned entry point. The drill head is steerable — the operator controls its direction using an electronic tracking and guidance system that monitors the drill head's position, depth, pitch, and roll in real time. The pilot bore follows the pre-planned path, navigating around existing utilities and under obstacles like roads, driveways, sidewalks, or waterways. Drilling fluid (bentonite slurry) is pumped through the drill string to lubricate the bore, stabilize the hole, and flush cuttings back to the surface.
Phase 2: Reaming
Once the pilot bore exits at the planned exit point, a reaming tool (back reamer) is attached to the drill string and pulled back through the pilot hole to enlarge it to the diameter required for the utility pipe being installed. For larger-diameter installations, multiple reaming passes may be performed, progressively increasing the bore diameter. Drilling fluid continues to stabilize the bore and remove cuttings throughout this phase.
Phase 3: Pullback
With the bore reamed to the correct size, the utility pipe or conduit is attached to the drill string at the exit point and pulled back through the bore hole to the entry point. The pipe is pulled steadily and smoothly to prevent damage. For gas line installations, WyoTex's certified fusion technicians complete all pipe joints using butt fusion, electrofusion, or socket fusion prior to pullback — creating a continuous, leak-free pipeline that's pulled through in a single operation.
Types of Utilities We Install with HDD
WyoTex Directional installs the full spectrum of underground utilities using horizontal directional drilling. Our capabilities include:
Gas Lines (Our Specialty)
Gas line installation is what sets WyoTex apart. We hold the specific licensing, certifications, and insurance required for gas line work in Texas — qualifications that most HDD contractors don't carry. Whether it's a residential gas service connection or a commercial gas main extension, we handle gas line HDD from bore to fusion to testing. Learn more about our gas line drilling services →
Water Lines
Professional water line installation for residential, commercial, and municipal projects. HDD is ideal for water line installations because it avoids disrupting existing infrastructure and eliminates the costly surface restoration required by open-cut trenching. We install HDPE, PVC, and ductile iron water lines in diameters from 2" to 12"+.
Fiber Optic & Telecommunications
Texas' exploding demand for high-speed internet and 5G infrastructure requires reliable underground conduit installation. WyoTex provides HDD boring for fiber optic cable, telecommunications conduit, and CATV/coaxial installations supporting both residential fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments and commercial backbone networks.
Electrical Conduit
Underground electrical conduit installation via HDD for power distribution, street lighting, traffic signals, and commercial electrical service. Directional boring places conduit accurately at the required depth without disturbing surface improvements or existing utilities.
Sewer & Storm Drainage
Gravity sewer and force main installation using HDD. Trenchless sewer installation is especially valuable in developed areas where open-cut trenching would require tearing up roads, sidewalks, or heavily landscaped properties. We also install stormwater drainage pipe and culverts using directional boring methods.
HDD vs. Traditional Trenching: Why Trenchless Wins
For decades, installing underground utilities meant digging open trenches — tearing up roads, destroying landscaping, and disrupting neighborhoods for weeks. Horizontal directional drilling changed everything. Here's how HDD compares to traditional open-cut trenching:
| Factor | HDD (Directional Drilling) | Open-Cut Trenching |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Disruption | ✓ Minimal — entry/exit points only | ✗ Full surface excavation |
| Landscaping Impact | ✓ Preserved | ✗ Destroyed — requires restoration |
| Road Crossings | ✓ Bores underneath — no cuts | ✗ Requires cutting & repaving |
| Project Speed | ✓ Typically faster | ✗ Slower due to excavation & backfill |
| Restoration Cost | ✓ Minimal or none | ✗ Often significant |
| Environmental Impact | ✓ Low — less soil disturbance | ✗ High — large excavation footprint |
| Traffic Disruption | ✓ Minimal | ✗ Significant — road closures common |
| Obstacle Crossings | ✓ Rivers, highways, railroads | ✗ Cannot cross most obstacles |
💡 Total Project Cost
While HDD's per-foot drilling cost may sometimes be higher than trenching, the total project cost is often lower when you factor in zero surface restoration, faster completion, and no road repair expenses. For developed areas, HDD is almost always the more cost-effective choice.
Central Texas Soil Conditions & Our HDD Expertise
Central Texas presents unique challenges for horizontal directional drilling. The Austin–San Antonio corridor features a mix of soil types that require experienced operators and proper equipment:
- Edwards Limestone — The rocky limestone formations found across Central Texas (especially in the Hill Country) require powerful drill rigs and rock-cutting tooling. WyoTex's equipment is rated for rock boring.
- Black Clay (Houston Black / Branyon) — Expansive clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Proper bore path planning and drilling fluid management prevent bore collapse in clay.
- Sandy Loam — Found in river valleys and flood plains along the Guadalupe, Comal, and Colorado Rivers. Sandy soils require appropriate drilling fluid to maintain bore stability.
- Caliche — Hard calcium carbonate layers common in South and Central Texas. Caliche demands experienced operators who can identify and navigate through these cemented layers.
- Mixed/Layered Soils — Many Texas bore paths cross multiple soil types. Our electronic guidance systems and experienced operators adapt drilling parameters in real time for each condition encountered.
WyoTex Directional has extensive experience boring in every soil type found along the I-35 corridor from Georgetown to San Antonio. We know the ground conditions, the challenges, and the techniques required to deliver clean, accurate bores in Central Texas soil.
Residential HDD Applications
Homeowners and residential builders choose WyoTex Directional's HDD services for a wide range of underground utility projects:
